Relation to Place
Is a person's environment important?
Many would say yes. The blog, Importance of Place, emphasizes the need for places where people feel comfortable in a world of such hectic and fast paced activities. This specific blog is run by a religious man. However, the importance of environment isn't only a religious concern. Place and environment are intricately connected to how a person feels. People living in cluttered, dirty homes tend to be more depressed or irritable than someone living in a spotless home. The state of SLA, currently, is not concurrent of a learning environment. People become what they are surrounded by and what SLA students are surrounded by is negativity. A negative environment will only harm those involved.
The book, "People Habitat," is a collection of essays pertaining to cities, green spaces, and where people chose to live. One essay titled, "On the importance of a sense of place," says that cities and towns have souls. There is an irreplaceable something that makes the neighborhood feel like a home. Places like this are lively and full of people who enjoy where they are. SLA is one of these places. However, the poorly upkept building is warring endlessly with the idea that SLA is someplace people can feel comfortable and alive. These two things cannot coexist.
If you are interested in exploring further resources on these concepts, consider listening to the podcast "On Being" with Krista Tippett. Many of her episodes address environment and a person's relation to the place they live/work.
